ABSTRACT

Guillaume (2004) suggested that misbehavior happens more frequently when students believe the teacher cannot see them. With that concept in mind, be sure to demonstrate that you know what’s going on with students. Be an alert teacher; show your “withitness” (Kounin, 1977). Frequently circulating the room keeps you with it, and your mere presence deters students from misbehaving. When you notice misbehavior, your official “silent look” tells a student to change the behavior. Once students know you are on to them, they are less likely to test you.
