ABSTRACT

Your students will test you, especially in the area of classroom management. They will see how far they can push you, whether you are consistent, and whether you mean what you say. Why? Because you are a teacher, you are new to them, and they’re kids! Don’t feel like you have to be a drill sergeant to command respect, but do be firm. Above all, be consistent. Don’t suggest a consequence you can’t carry out. Making idle threats has gotten many beginning teachers in a bind. Once students realize threats won’t be followed through, they have victory! When setting consequences, choose options you can and will implement.
