ABSTRACT

“Why do we have to do this?” or “Why do we have to learn about that?” are common why questions students ask. Why questions sometimes seem disrespectful, but they need not be. When students understand the purpose of a rule, lesson, or assignment, they relate better to what is being asked of them and are more likely to engage in the activities. If you explain the rationale behind the rule or activity when introducing it, you can avoid why questions later.
