This technique is very effective, particularly with older students. It is not unusual for a student to argue with the teacher when his or her behavior is being corrected. Many teachers make the mistake of entering into the argument, creating a tugof-war between teacher and student. Rather than enter this no-win battle, use the broken record technique. This technique entails continually stating the facts and the rules being broken without responding to the student’s argumentative phrases. The broken record technique keeps the focus on rules and the power with the teacher. You sound like a broken record Teacher

“I didn’t pass a note.”

Teacher

“In this class, notes are not passed. Conversation waits until an appropriate time.”

Sue
