ABSTRACT

Holding students accountable for their behavior is critical to a well-managed classroom. The challenge is determining the appropriate manner for addressing a problem. According to Ryan (2008), students respond much more effectively to private reprimands rather than call-outs of their misbehavior. Addressing only the misbehaving student also avoids distracting others from their work. Furthermore, private discussions minimize repeat misbehaviors from students who seek attention in negative ways and may be amused at being called out by the teacher.
