ABSTRACT
What if a student uses inappropriate language in the classroom? You can punish the offender and render a consequence, but it may be more productive to give the student the opportunity to “expand” his or her vocabulary bank and use alternative words. When a student curses or uses a phrase inappropriate to the classroom, simply ask the student to rephrase the statement into more acceptable language. This exercise teaches students how to adapt their speech and actions to various environments.
