ABSTRACT

Remember that the only information teachers can share with other students and parents is called directory information. This data includes student’s name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, honors and awards, and dates of attendance. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), parents or guardians have the option of blocking the release of this information. Schools are annually required to notify parents and eligible students of their rights under FERPA, but the method of notification is at the school’s discretion. To protect confidentiality and honor students’ rights, it is important for you to know who has blocked directory information.
