ABSTRACT

When using food in the classroom, it is very important to be aware of three important things. First, consider the message you send if food is used as an extrinsic reward. Is food equated with success? Could an intrinsic reward replace an extrinsic reward? Second, check students’ records for allergies or special diet requirements. You can look on the student health card or refer to a form that you provided to parents at the beginning of the year (see Open House). Third, be aware of school policies regarding food. Many schools have instituted a “bought goods only” policy for safety and health reasons. Also see Rewarding Positive Behavior.
