ABSTRACT

Gang influence begins at a young age, and elementary school is not too early to be aware of possible gang involvement. Gang expert Michael Leonard (2012) identified characteristics that may indicate a child has ties to a gang, which are listed here and available at https://www.gangsrreal.com" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">www.gangsrreal.com. Both teachers and parents should take action if an adolescent exhibits the following traits:

Significant change in work habits

Frequent absences from school (gang members skip school often)

Changed vocabulary that includes a lot of slang

New friends that may be questionable in character

Sudden use of alcohol or drugs

Behavioral changes or increased emotional mood swings

To help prevent children from being enticed by a gang, Leonard (2012) suggested parent involvement and proactive strategies. Teachers can enhance parents’ efforts by applying these strategies in the classroom:

Be an encourager.

Help educate students about the dangers of gang membership.

Do not permit any use of gang names, symbols, clothing, or graffiti.

Monitor closely all computer activity to prevent students from online recruiting tactics.

Treat students in self-esteem boosting ways so they won’t be vulnerable to gangs.

Encourage involvement in extracurricular activities.
