ABSTRACT

Like it or not, a good portion of your teaching life will be spent grading student work. Though time-consuming, it is an essential task for evaluating student progress. Using authentic assessments helps you make the most of your time and energy. Carefully select the tasks you collect for student grades, offer meaningful and helpful feedback on the finished assignments, and return them to students. Assessment strategies should match lesson goals and objectives; never assign busywork. Tasks must be meaningful; your time as well as your students’ time is valuable. For evaluation and conferencing purposes, maintain accurate records on all student work and save samples of key assignments that showcase growth or concerns.
