ABSTRACT

What’s in a color? Think back on homework returned to you and marked with the teacher’s comments. What do you remember about his or her comments and the color of ink? Research conducted with teachers and students indicated that ink color influences how teachers grade and how students perceive their teachers (Dukes & Albanesi, 2012). Teachers tend to mark more critically when using red ink, and students associate negative connotations with comments and markings in red ink. With these studies in mind, consider using other colors when choosing grading pens.
