ABSTRACT

An effective way to establish a positive rapport with students is to greet each one at the door on a regular basis. A warm “Hello, how are you doing today?” or a handshake helps each student feel welcome and special. So that each student receives the greeting he or she is most comfortable with, you can place pictures of a high five, a handshake, a hug, and an X by the door. When entering the room, the student points to the preferred greeting. Many teachers find this method effective and it gives the student a feeling of control.
