ABSTRACT

Driving home from work, Latisha suddenly became warm all over, felt her chest constrict as her breathing rate increased sharply, and developed a choking feeling in her throat as she struggled to get her breath. As sensa tions of nausea and dizziness crept over her, she began to shake uncontrol lably. Several times before in her life, Latisha had gotten very warm, started breathing fast, and felt her heart racing. She had been frightened then, but all those times she was okay after a few minutes. This time her heart was really pounding, harder than it ever had, and did not seem like it would stop. Latisha was more than frightened-she was absolutely terrified. Her heart felt as if it would pound through her skin at any minute. She was afraid it would explode.
