ABSTRACT

Parents raise their children expecting and hoping for certain special events to occur for them—satisfying jobs, friends in abundance, marriage and children. Many times it looks as though these dreams have come true, when suddenly the doorbell rings and there is their daughter Polly in tears: Polly and John are separating. They have been married for ten years, each have jobs they enjoy, and their two children Tom, eight, and Ricky, six, are loved by their parents and grandparents alike. Polly, sobbing, says that she and John have been quarreling more and more lately and have decided to get a divorce. They have gone to see a marriage counselor, but it didn't change their decision to separate—and everyone is miserable.
