ABSTRACT
American expansion across the Pacific Ocean in the second half of the nineteenth century paved the way for the nation’s rise to world power in the twentieth. While the United States took only baby steps in Africa and the Middle East during this period, Americans joined with western European states forcefully asserting their interests in China, Japan, and Korea.
