ABSTRACT

I will discuss free association in considerable detail because I think the topic lends itself well to consideration of many aspects of the difference between a one-person and a two-person psychology. Free association is likely to be classed as an intrinsic criterion of the psychoanalytic situation, but whether to call it extrinsic or intrinsic sharpens the realization that intrinsic factors can be divided into those for which the therapist is primarily responsible and those for which the patient is primarily responsible. I have called the analysis of the transference an intrinsic factor. It is primarily the therapist's job, whereas free association is primarily the patient's job. But such formulations can be misleading. Everything in an analysis is contributed to by both participants.
