ABSTRACT
This essay has always been among my personal favorites, and it got a lot of responses from psychiatrists around the country engaged in hard, unprestigious, and often thankless work who identified with the feelings expressed here. Lewiston (where I still work in the same clinic) provides a real-world balance to my own private psychotherapy practice; it keeps me honest.
