ABSTRACT
Empirical studies of the meaning of sports in contemporary Japan point out the multilayered complexity of attitudes and expectations with which sport is confronted (Asada and Kataoka 1975; Ehashi 1979; Niwa and Kaneko 1983; Niwa 1985; Kusaka and Maruyama 1988; Sanbonmatsu 1979, 1994).
