ABSTRACT

Sex is for pleasure, yes, but some kinds of sexual activity also result in conception. In fact, many people think only of heterosexual intercourse when they refer to sex, and make it their major source of sexual expression. Effective contraception may or may not be used. The high incidence of unwanted pregnancy in the U.S. is partially reflected in the more than one and one-half million legal abortions performed each year, which represent one quarter of all pregnancies. Because no form of birth control is absolutely safe and reliable for everyone, many other problematic pregnancies are carried to term. The counselor will frequently encounter the issue of unintended pregnancy, either currently or as part of a client’s history.
