ABSTRACT

A counselor who is tolerant of a wide range of sexual behavior can certainly be helpful to more people than one whose view of “normal” sexuality is limited. However as counselors gain skill in sexuality counseling, they may be surprised by the amount of bizarre, scarey, unconventional, and just plain peculiar sexual preferences many people have. When is shock and distaste on the helper’s part genuine and a cue to ask clients about the appropriateness of their behavior? Certainly no current Krafft-Ebing list of “perversions” would be accepted by everyone, and indeed labeling any kind of sexuality as not okay is highly subjective.
