ABSTRACT

An article appearing in USA Today (1992, December 2, p. 1) reported that depression is continuing to rise in America. The article also stated that the rate of depression has increased with each passing generation since records started being kept around the turn of the century. Mental health experts cited in the article stated that the depression problem was “nearing epidemic proportions.” Estimates regarding the hundreds of millions of dollars lost annually due to depression-related work absences and lowered productivity also were reported.
