The Emotional Competence Model has been modified for reader convenience and use in this publication . The model 's four-step process has been adapted to include two versions that are sensitive to both younger and older children. These adaptations were developed with sensitivity to developmental differences in emotion-focused coping skills and with consideration for the more primitive capacity of early elementary school children in this area. (Dubow, Schmidt, McBride, Edwards, & Merk, 1993). Furthermore, it has been modified to utilize human figures and characters instead of turtles as main characters in the various lessons. Although animal puppetry captures children's attention, puppets of this nature are not always accessible to counselors and mental health educators.
