ABSTRACT

Differences and similarities between the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Fourth Edition and Individual Psychology are identified and discussed. The DSM-IV system is based on a pathological model and a psychology of possession, whereas the Adlerian approach is based on a growth model and a psychology of use. The Adlerian approach emphases are (a) psychological reasons in explaining behavior and symptoms (Psychodynamic focus); (b) attitudes and beliefs about self and the world (cognitive focus); and (c) family constellation, social interactions, and psychological movement (systems focus).
