ABSTRACT

So far, from the voices you have heard, you might reasonably conclude that most helpers do what they do solely out of an altruistic spirit. The situation is actually a whole lot more complicated.

For one thing, as a beginner, you are likely to be far more self-conscious about what you are doing and why than someone who is more experienced in this work. The best helping is often the kind that seems automatic and effortless at the time. There is little or no conscious thought; it just seems like the thing to do.
