ABSTRACT

People work as sustainability professionals in a wide range of settings and scales and with a wide range of titles. Some jobs have broad responsibility, for example sustainability coordinator, sustainability director, or corporate responsibility director. Some jobs are specialized, for example recycling coordinator, waste reduction analyst, pollution prevention specialist, energy analyst, or green building advisor. Practitioners can work for private businesses or corporations, cities, schools, colleges or universities, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), nonprofit organizations, governments, the military, groups that work on generating national policies and laws, and international agencies. A professional may be hired for a particular project or they may be hired to do an evaluation and make recommendations. Often a person working in another kind of position is assigned a sustainability project as part of their other work, and as the organization begins to learn about the elements of sustainability their project grows into a job. Many sustainability practitioners have evolving job descriptions, and many create their own positions as they go along.
