ABSTRACT

QCA ICT Unit 1A: An introduction to modelling focuses on developing children’s understanding that computers can simulate real-life or imaginary experiences, albeit in a simplified form. However, there are very few simulations and adventure programs which are suitable for young children. Unit 1C: The information around us specifically mentions the use of a talking book as a means of raising pupils’ awareness of the different ways in which information can be presented. Providing an opportunity for children to interact with talking stories not only enhances their literacy skills; it also lays the foundation for skills and knowledge in accessing information presented electronically. Developing awareness that information on a computer screen, unlike a TV screen, can be responsive to the children’s actions with the mouse pointer and that certain actions result in particular effects (e.g. clicking on a button) is very important for helping them interact with computer-based and web-based information sources.
