ABSTRACT

Most children will have used a programmable toy but some may need reminding about how it works. Although not essential, the toy is useful to remind the children about how it is controlled and to help establish the relationship between the toy and the aerial view and control of the screen turtle. Unlike most full versions of Logo, the simple introductory programs include a series of simplified controls graded for increasing levels of difficulty and usually a set of screens which the children can explore. The different levels of control and turning on the programming flow-chart feature is achieved by using the Teacher controls. A major feature of Logo programming is what Paper, the founder of Logo, considers to be its ‘low floor and high ceiling’ – that is, it is easy enough for the youngest, most inexperienced child to use but has the potential to challenge even a post graduate student's thinking.
