ABSTRACT

The children are encouraged to build pictures by exploring the way in which each element can be repositioned and how the colours can be changed to create their own designs. There are several key differences in the way that paint and draw software behave. It helps to think of objects in draw software as floating in front of the ‘paper’ whereas paint objects appear to become part of the background. Clearly children will not automatically learn about the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in the world through carrying out this activity. As with so many learning activities the quality of the experience hinges on the thoughtful intervention of the practitioner. Children can be challenged by the complexity of the task to develop their use of ICT. By helping children to explore a simple program on the computer and perform simple functions using the tools and icons, a contribution to their knowledge and understanding of the world is made.
