ABSTRACT

Use and adapt a class-produced spreadsheet to model possible ingredients for a healthy sandwich to meet the needs of a friend. The spreadsheet model will help the children make choices to inform their designing and making. Using nutritional information from food labels, formulae will be constructed with the aid of the teacher to calculate the consequences of their choices. While children will not be expected to create their own spreadsheet models until they reach Year 5 or Year 6, teachers can use MS Excel to create information-gathering and modelling packages for much younger children. The inclusion of an information and communication technology (ICT) activity of this kind in D&T teaching encourages children to make decisions and evaluate them as they design.
