ABSTRACT

Hoisted in the window of the Royal Geographical Society’s gallery in South Kensington, London, visible from the road outside, are the two sepia-toned sails of Susan Stockwell’s The Empire Builders (2010). Printed onto the fabric sails, the faces of Scott, Livingstone, Smith, Raleigh, and Cabot gaze out across the gallery. Surveying the room from their canvas location, these disembodied explorers and industrialists celebrate a legacy of mapping and geographical knowledge making.
