ABSTRACT

This short extract provides a rather different ideological perspective from that presented in the rest of this section. Golby distinguishes three traditions in primary education:

an elementary tradition concerned with the inculcation of essential knowledge into passive pupils;

a progressive tradition celebrating self-expression, individual autonomy and personal growth, but lacking an adequate theory of knowledge to help it define the primary curriculum; and

a technological tradition stressing utilitarian values associated with the pursuit of science and technology.
