ABSTRACT

The concern of sociologists with inequality has been complemented in recent years by the study of the ways in which gender and cultural background influence expectations and experience of schooling. The article by Lynne Davies emphasizes the need to acknowledge the complexity of children’s individuality and the extent to which teacher bias and prejudice can influence their expectations and experience of school. Every teacher needs to be aware of their own racist and sexist tendencies and the racism and sexism which exists in the curriculum experiences of children.
