ABSTRACT

The ideas of Ausubel are explored and explained further in the next extract by McClelland. He argues that it is essential that teachers understand the processes of learning in order to improve judgments made in the classroom. Ausubel’s theory, he suggests provides a useful framework for understanding learning, but has proved inaccessible to many teachers because of the technical nature of the language used. McClelland admits that in attempting to represent some of the main features of the theory there is a likelihood that it becomes distorted and less rigorous.
