ABSTRACT

The final psychological perspective to be considered derives form the work of Carl Rogers. Although he began his work with children, much of his experience was with adults. He adopted a ‘client-centred’ approach to his work which was concerned with psychotherapy. He developed theories relating to the nature of the individual and human personality. In 1969 he wrote Freedom to Learn which brought together his thinking about education and teaching. As his work in psychotherapy has been concerned with the ‘person’, so his writing on education focuses upon the individual and the attitudes of the teacher rather than methods of instruction. This viewpoint is reinforced in his statement that the aim of education is the facilitation of learning.
