ABSTRACT
Assuming that we enjoy a normal lifespan, the longest phase of the life cycle will be spent in adulthood. Until recently, however, personality changes in adulthood attracted little psychological research interest. Indeed, as Levinson et al. (1978) have observed, adulthood is ‘… one of the best-kept secrets in our society and probably in human history generally’.
