ABSTRACT
The sudden disappearance of the long-established EW. Woolworth's variety stores from 'Main Street' USA in 1997, the bankruptcy of Macy's - New York City's and the world's largest department store - in 1991, and the increasingly common usage of phrases such as the 'Wal-Martization of Ameriea', provide some simple yet graphie illustrations from just one economy of the dynamie nature of the transformation of retail capital. In this seetion of the book that dynamie, and the processes of retail restructuring whieh power it, provide our focus. In partieular, we consider five key issues: the concentration of capital and reconfiguration of corporate structures in retailing, the character and shifting power balance of retailer-supplier relations, organizational and technologieal transformations of the industry, changing retail employment relations, and retail regulation and governance.
