ABSTRACT

There has been steady and increasing demand for denominational schools of all faiths. This popularity is often due to such schools attaining success in secular public examinations. John Marshall, the former MP for Finchley and Hendon South, said on one occasion that the schools also added a further dimension to a child's development in that they taught ‘not only the three R's but also two more – the difference between right and wrong.’ Similar sentiments were expressed by the National Society (Church of England) for Promoting Religious Education, when it stated that there was a ‘fourth R’ – religion.
