ABSTRACT

On an urban planet, healthy city planning is about global health. Few topics are more important to health than city and community planning and development. Yet, neither planning nor public health is currently organized to ensure that our planet of cities will be equitable and healthy. A new strategy for planning and managing cities and metropolitan regions is necessary for planetary sustainability and survival. This book offers a framework for planning healthy and equitable cities where neighbourhood-scale innovations are linked to national policy initiatives. Healthy city planning here is about eliminating the deep and persistent inequities that plague cities and the new knowledge, practices and participants that must become central features of urban policy-making and urban institutions in order to promote greater urban health justice.
