ABSTRACT

Fieldtrips are one of the great bonuses of geography degrees. While the occasional student might view a field-class as a fantastic holiday with mates, the staff tend to have a learning agenda that is well planned and costly. Geography departments donate a considerable proportion of their budgets to fund fieldwork because they are convinced it:

develops observation and research skills;

gives a realistic insight into research activities;

allows hands-on, practical experience of field techniques;

encourages individuals to take responsibility for research decisions;

develops group and interpersonal skills;

encourages students to talk through issues with staff and through small group research work;

allows students to experience alternative and sometimes unfamiliar environments.
