ABSTRACT

Most UK degree courses have a fi nal year module that involves personal research and an extended piece of writing. Whether it is called a dissertation, project, long project or something else, it will count for 20-60 credits and therefore can have a considerable impact on your fi nal degree result. Each department has its own timing, style, preparation, expectations of length and monitoring procedures. Most departments produce detailed guidelines and run briefi ng sessions so everyone is aware of the rules. Missing these briefi ngs is a BAD idea; one of your better ideas will be to reread the module handbook every six weeks, to remind yourself of expectations, milestones and guidelines.
