ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION When deaf spellers make errors, the misspellings they produce are quite different than those of hearing spellers. For example, a common misspelling of the word mortgage by deaf spellers is mortage (Hanson, Shankweiler, & Fischer, 1983). Compare that misspelling with the common misspelling of mortgage by hearing spellers, which is morgage. Both misspellings leave out one letter from the correct spelling. They differ notably, however, in which letter is left out. The common error by hearing spellers is consistent with how mortgage is pronounced. The common error by deaf spellers is not.
