ABSTRACT

One question that has been of longstanding interest to philosophers, psychologists, and laypersons concerns the relation between the evaluative or affective nature of an event and event recall. At least two independent factors need to be taken into consideration in addressing this question. The first is the affective intensity (or evaluative extremity) of events: Is recall better for events that are intense or for those that are not intense? The second concerns the evaluative direction (or valence) of events: Is recall better for events that are pleasant or for those that are unpleasant?
