ABSTRACT
When I left the Army in 1946 after World War II ended, I sought advice from Gardner Murphy, a widely appreciated professor at CCNY where I received my batchelor’s degree, about where I should go for a doctorate degree. I had been enrolled for a semester before the war at Columbia, and could have returned automatically, but Murphy advised me that my interests in psychodynamics would not be well served there.
