ABSTRACT

Psychological representations of humans, including those offered by personality psychologists and clinicians, often enough are found to be wanting. Consider a personality description that might be provided by a psychologist using the now widely recognized Five Factor model for personality traits. Following Goldberg's (1981) simplified characterization of the Big Five personality factors, a person would be described in terms of five bipolar factors: active or passive; agreeable or not; responsible or not; crazy or sane; smart or dumb(p. 161).
