INTRODUCTION The major outlines of how to use an associative computer can be found clearly expressed in Aristotle circa 500 B.c. Aristotle made two important claims about memory structure: First, the elementary unit of memory is a sense image and, second, links between elementary memories serve as the basis for higher-level cognition. An English translation, by Richard Sorabji (1972), used the term memory for the elementary unit and recollection for reasoning by associations between elementary units.
