ABSTRACT

SUMMARY This chapter aims to review the main research contributions concerning the implications of telematics for organization structure and processes from a psychosocial perspective. Special attention is given to organizational communication, organizational size and structure (complexity, centralization), supervision and management, organizational culture and organizationenvironment exchange. Limitation of technological determinism is emphasized and a bi-directional influence between telematics and individual and organizational phenomena is stressed. In effect, individuals and organizations are not determined by the new technologies and they can influence and manage them in several ways in order to fulfil their own needs, expectations and goals. Users' preferences, design, implementation and management strategies of these technologies are mechanisms that moderate their implications on individuals and organizations.
