ABSTRACT

What has this book offered about telematics and work? Looking back at the preceding chapters, it can be noted that a variety of observations have been brought together with regard to the development of the technology, the way in which telematic systems are utilized, and a number of organizational and behavioural changes that can be attributed to telematics. The most remarkable finding is that the 'tele '-aspect of telematics is far less important than the 'network' aspect. Several authors have drawn attention to the fact that the adoption of telematic systems leads to the establishment of all kinds of new connections within and between organizations, resulting in new patterns of organizing that are referred to as 'network organization'. Thus telematics seems to have an impact on organizational structure and processes. Another important observation, related to this, is that the technology offers a variety of options that decision makers in organizations can and do choose from. Not only are strategic choices held to be crucial for the process of technological development, and the employment of telematic systems in organizations, they are also considered as decisive for the effects on the organization and the user.
