Evidence for Flashbulb Memories book
Almost since its inception, the FMH and the concept ofFMs has been under concerted attack. The previous chapter showed that purely theoretical criticisms and single instances of memories do not provide convincing evidence against the FMH. Similarly, many of the studies that have concluded against the FMH can themselves be shown to contain flaws that weaken their credibility and, in some instances, their findings are subject to multiple interpretations. The studies of FMs to be considered in the present chapter are less open to such criticisms and, generally, have tended to provide evidence of FMs. This evidence, however, by no means gives overwhelming or uncritical support to the FMH, which still appears to require revision in several respects. Nevertheless, there is evidence for the existence of FMs and it is to this that we now turn.
