ABSTRACT

In the preceding chapters we have examined the many different ways in which languages can change and considered how and why such changes might take place. Later, in Chapter 10, we’ll be looking at the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of language change from a very different point of view. For the moment, though, we turn our attention to a different issue: the consequences of language change. After generations, or centuries, or millennia, of language change, what is the result?
