ABSTRACT

The research program we have guided for the past decade has been divided into three phases, which were each defined by a different question. The first question can be paraphrased: “Do decent people behave indecently when they are banded together in a group?” Under certain, specific conditions the answer is a resounding “yes.” The second question was: “Why do decent people behave indecently when banded together in groups?” After addressing this question, we turned to the third question: “What are the conditions which will make intergroup behavior as decent as interindividual behavior?” Although this chapter will focus on the progress made toward answering the last question, it will first be necessary to summarize the work relevant to the first two questions.
